About Alfriston Clergy House

Amongst the treasures of this town is the first house to be acquired by the National Trust, this is the magnificent Priest's, or Clergy House, the name by which it is mostly known. The house is a perfect example of a 14th century pre-Reformation vicarage, built in the style of a typical thatched Wealden Hall House. It is a half-timbered, wattle and daub building which had fallen into decay. Save for the efforts of the local Rector, the Reverend Beynon of Alfriston, this beautiful building may have been lost forever. Reverend Beynon set up an appeal which led to the National Trust purchasing the house in 1896 for a one off payment of £10.

Careful restoration has left the house much as it was when first built, including typical Sussex chalk floors, and soot-blackened timbers. These are original, although re-roofing was necessary. There is a theory that it may have originated as a yeomen farmers home and later was passed to the church.

The house is situated close to the church at the edge of a charming village green, it is cherished as one of the few surviving Wealden hall houses. It has a central hall rising to the rafters, with two storey blocks rising on either side. When it was built, one block would have been used by the family, the other would have been service quarters.

In the house visitors can see the Hall, two other rooms and an exhibition room. A pretty cottage garden surrounds Alfriston Clergy House, beyond which is the churchyard of the local parish church.

Alfriston Clergy House, in its sublime English country setting is well worth seeing. It is open to the public between April and October.
